Hi
THis is a short report on the press conference yesterday which has evolved
into the political statement of the citizen's summit which the Tunisian
government has prevented from happening...
By all accounts it was very good (only in Arabic and French translation
though)...even people who did not fully understand the words felt the
tremendous energy and when the chanting started, some colleagues from the
US Media Justice Delegation were almost moved to tears...
The solidarity with the hunger strikers this morning also went well I
heard... more later...

Hello,
This afternoon (4.30 pm) a press conference took place in the venue of the
tunisian human rights ligue building, in the town of Tunis. Several
official speakers took the floor, among which Mokhtar Trifi (president of
human rights ligue), Shirin Ebadi (peace nobel price 2003), The UN
special raporteur on human rights, the mayor of Geneva, Ms Trautmann (EU
Parliament), etc.... Many delegates from national delegations and many
international journalists were present and this time the meeting was
neither blocked nor disturbed by the authorities. Reports will be written
and sent to the list tomorrow, I think.
During this meeting Shirin Ebadi also asked for a strong sign of
solidarity towards the 7 tunisian civil society personnalities who are
still on a hunger strike. They have been on hunger strike since the 18th
of october and among them certain are in a dangerous physicall condition
now. This is a call to all international civil society actors to meet the
hungers strikers tomorrow at 9am to express them our solidarity.
We will meet at 9am at the following address:
23 Mokhtar attia
In Tunis
Near the central bank and just opposite to the ATB building.
