Dear Friends on this Asia list

AS you will see in the note to the CSBureau below, there is a call for a
possible meeting in Capetown after the ICANN meetings (Dec. 1-5), to discuss
the future of CSB. (Please see forwarded note from Renata Bloem below this
message)

For a few reasons I already stated several times on this list, I am not keen
to play the role of Asia Pacific focal point within the CSB for Phase 2 of
WSIS. Therefore I am reluctant to respond to Renata's post, without first
consulting this group as to who among us are willing to play the role Angela
and myself played in Phase One.

(Actually, Angela, you are in a good position to still be focal point given
your experience, and the fact that in the Geneva Summit, you sat in for our
regional family in the last few meetings. So, I don't know if you are still
keen...are you?)

What I hope is that some thoughts emerge from this forum (and maybe some
volunteers), and then we can just map out a process of easing that person
(or those persons) into the focal point role. Naturally the planned CSB
meeting in Capetown on Dec. 6-8 would be ideal to introduce that new person
(assuming funds are available).

so how about it, friends? Please holler what you think, and if you are open
to playing a convenor role.

On a related note:

I am not sure if I posted it here, but some of you may know that there will
be an Asian Civil Society Forum 2004 in Bangkok this Nov. 21-25. (website:
www.acsf.info ). The organizers have accepted a proposal for us to organize
a couple of thematic briefing sessions on the 25th dealing with:
"Communication Rights: WSIS and Beyond". One of the panels will be
specifically on WSIS (internet goverannce, financing etc.) That could be a
venue also for us to discuss these things face-to-face, at least for those
who are there. (Some from the old gang will be there: Supinya, Anoop, Adam,
maybe Patcha, Isis, APC Women.)

FMA may have a some funds to sponsor someone form Asia (priority Southeast
Asia, because of the donor) to attend the ACSF. It could therefore happen
that whoever emerges as our probable WSIS rep could be funded to go to
Bangkok to strategize a bit with some of us who will be in ACSF. But I will
have to know soon as logistical concerns demand it...

So.

- Who do you think could assume the function of Asia Pacific focal point in
WSIS (i.e., CSB?). Angela? Or if not, who?
- Will s/he be available for the Dec. 6-8 meeting in Capetown (if funded)?
- Would s/he be available to go to Bangkok (Nov. 21-26) for ACSF and to
participate in WSIS and related discussions with some of us there?

Please answer ASAP if you have some thoughts...

Cheers
Al Alegre

TO CS Bureau

Dear friends,

Could you please tell us urgently who from the existing CS Bureau could be
free to come to Cape Town, South Africa, around the 6-8 December, if funding
could be made available? The objective is to have an in depth discussion on
the role and way forward of the CS Bureau.

I hope to hear from you all.

Best,

Renata
