Hello all

AS you can gather from the exchange below with the CSB members and the CSD,
it seems that:

- only 18 people will have fellowships. Total.
- this includes at least one each from the FAmilies (how many are they
now...21 by my last count)
- their main donor specifies countries from LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, which
by the way excludes the most of our current participant countries which are
mostly DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. They say there will be 4 exceptions to this
(from the 18).
(Only a few are Asian/Pacific LDCs: Bangla Desh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao PDR,
Myanmar, Nepal, the Pacific countries like Tuvalu, W. Samoa? any more?)

So thought it warms the heart that AFrica submitted more than 30 names :-),
I seriously doubt how a large majority of them can be funded. So
realistically, if we get more than 2 or 3 funded to go to Geneva, I would be
very surprised.

The parallel track is what Angela has said: some of us will try to get to
PrepCom3 on other funds (own or other donor--like GKP, or UNDP, or others).
(I note that some of these may--or may not--be: Angela, Adam/Izumi?, David
Leeming,.... any others? Susanna/Mavic? YJ? Gaurab? Patcha?)

Or most of us will stay home.

This brings home the reality of how much we can really expect from the CSD
in funding people to the Summit itself. Though conditions may change, the
CSD in my mind has not shown enough leadership in resource-building
commensurate to the need of CS stakeholders. Which brings us to the need for
us to organize our own fundraising efforts for the summit and beyond, if we
want to maximize our participation.

Concretely, beyond PrepCom3, I suggest the setting up of a Task Force on
Financing/Logistics to assess the needs and capacities of all Asian CSO
partners who are committed to engaging the Summit processes, and to leverage
our unity with some donors, especially regional ones--who may by open to
helping us out. (A similar committee was formed in Bangkok last November, as
part of our general plans...am suggesting we revive this.)

Thoughts?

Al
