Asia Pacific NGO Coordination Committee for
WSIS (AP NGO CCW)
Precedes The Asian Civil Society Caucus at PrepCom 1
World Summit on Information Society, Geneva 2003
The Asian Civil society Caucus for the World Summit on
Information Society was formed through joint efforts of those from
Asia Pacific region present at the Preparatory Committee
(PrepCom) meeting held in Geneva on 1-5 July, 2002. The Asian
Civil Society Caucus at its formation had representation from
Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and
Vietnam.
The regional process moved forward with different meetings
organized in the region. The regional group also actively
participated in the Tokyo Regional Meeting. The Asia Pacific NGO
Coordination Committee for WSIS (AP NOG CCW) resulted from
the First Civil Society Plenary held in Tokyo. The documents and
activities of the committee are documented at www.wsisasi.org,
and interaction are through the mailing list
communication@wsisasia.org.
The group aims to assert the Asian presence at the WSIS, by
raising issues relevant to the Asian Region. The civil societies of
Asia propose to take the lead in promoting substantive themes of
particular regional significance within the Summit processes,
including those of access, communication rights, and the
recognition of cultural dimensions crucial to this discourse. The AP
NGO CCW is sensitive to the rights of Small Island Developing
States and smaller developing countries.
The group support the Civil society plenary in its entirety and hopes
to work together with other regional and special caucus and groups
in furthering the cause of Information society in the world. Owing to
the size of the Asian continent, the Asian CSO caucus will look
forward to sub regional process as a viable way for CSO
collaboration on issues relating to information society.
The caucus invites all individuals and groups working in or with
interest in the Asian region to participate in the discussion. The
discussion of the caucus will take place through the mailing list
established to take the initiative forward at
communication@wsisasia.org. You can subscribe to the list by
sending an e-mail to communication-ctl@wsisasia.org, with
subscribe in the body of the message.
